In August 2006 with my Dad and four mates we joined a group and trekked the Kokoda Track which is a 96km trail across the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea. It is a hard, muddy trail through humid malaria infested jungle where Australian soldiers battled the Japanese for 6 solid months between July 1942 and January 1943 in World War II. We did the trek with Back Track Adventures, a Brisbane based company who only take small groups and use experienced Australian and local staff. Our experience with them was brilliant and I would recommend them to anyone planning to trek the Kokoda Track.
I didn’t write any notes at the time and given it was some years ago I will just provide a summary of trek and some photos.
Day 1 – Fly Port Moresby to Kokoda, explore Kokoda then walk to Hoi Village.
Day 2 – Trek to Alolo Village via Isurava Battlefield.
Day 3 – Trek to Templeton’s Crossing via the Lost Battlefield at Eora Creek.
Day 4 – Climb Mt Bellamy, then trek to and camp at Naduri Village via Myola Lakes.
Day 5 – Trek to Efogi 1 Village (Half day).
Day 6 – Ascent of Brigade Hill via Mission Ridge to camp at Menari Village (Half day).
Day 7 – Cross the Brown River and ascend the Maguli Range to camp at Nauro Village.
Day 8 – Descend to Ofi Creek then up and over the Irobaiwa Ridge and camp at Ua Ule Creek.
